High Voltage Test Equipment

Flash Test Fixtures

A flash test fixture tests whether or not the insulation in an electrical product is effective. The product has a large current flowed through it (much larger than the conditions it will operate under), and if the electricity sparks between components then the insulation is ineffective.

What is High Potential (HiPot) Testing

A hipot test is conducted by ensuring no current flows from one point to another on a circuit. A hipot test will take two conductors that should be isolated from one another and passes a high voltage between the two points. The current which flows between these points is then measured. If too much current flows, this would indicate that the points are not well isolated and the test will fail.

Why Test?

Hipot tests help the user to find damaged insulation, stray wire strands or damaged shielding, any conductive contaminants affecting the conductors, terminal spacing issues and tolerance errors in IDC cables. These conditions could be the cause of a device failing. The test results will indicate if there is good insulation between the different parts of a circuit. Having effective insulation in a circuit will help to guarantee its safety and quality.

Connectivity Checks

Due to the high currents involved, Yelo have also worked to ensure the safety of the equipment's operator. This has been achieved via a floating output. This is where a circuit has separate grounds; one for the equipment, and one for the operator. This creates a floating electrical circuit and therefore creates a safe testing environment

Arc Detection

Arc detection testing can be carried out on the device. Arc is a name for an electrical spark which occurs by voltage or current quickly changing. There should be no sparking in a hipot test - if it were present, this would indicate product quality issues.
